Pelé is a former
Brazilian professional soccer player and is considered one of the best soccer
players of all time. FIFA called him “the greatest” and he was one of the most
successful and famous athletes of the 20th century. Pelé is also the all-time
top scorer for Brazil with 77 goals in 92 games. Throughout his career, Pelé
has received numerous individual and team awards for his achievements and
heritage in the sport. He grew up in poverty and his track record has inspired
many aspiring football players around the world.
Early life

Pelé was born Edson
Arantes do Nascimento on October 23, 1940 in Brazil. He grew up in extreme
poverty in the city of Bauru, Sao Paulo. To earn money, she worked as an
assistant in tea rooms. His father, a soccer player, taught Pelé the sport. He
could not afford to buy good football because of bad condition. So he played
with a sock full of newspaper or grapefruit.
In his youth, Pelé
played for several amateur clubs. He also played for an indoor soccer team
called Radium. Pelé’s team won the first championship and much more. In one
match he participated in, he was considered too young to play. he eventually
became the top scorer of the competition with 15 goals
Pelé’s early career
In 1956, the 15-year-old
Pelé joined a professional club Santos FC. His coach told Santos managers that
he would be the “best football player in the world”. In 1957, when Pele was
just 16, he was the league’s top scorer. Ten months after signing up as a
professional, the Brazilian national team called up Pelé. After the World Cup
in 1958 and 1962, European clubs such as Real Madrid, Juventus and Manchester
United tried to recruit him. In 1961, the Brazilian government declared Pelé an
“official national treasure” to prevent his transfer.
During his time at FC
Santos, Pelé played with many talented players such as Pepe and Coutinho. Pelé
scored 643 goals for Santos, the most goals for a club until Lionel Messi
caught up with him. In 1974 he retired from Brazilian football.
International careers
In 1957, Pelé played his
first international match against Argentina. In the game, he scored his first
goal for Brazil at the age of 16, making him his country’s youngest goalcorer.
On June 29, 1958, at 17 years and 249 days, Pelé became the youngest player to
play in the World Cup final. Brazil won the World Cup and Pele’s debut goal was
selected as one of the best goals in World Cup history.

At the start of the 1962
World Cup, Pelé was considered the best player in the world. Brazil won the
World Cup again in 1962. Unfortunately, they lost the World Cup in 1968. After
that game, Pele vowed that he would never play in the World Cup again, but he
changed his decision in 1970. In Pelé initially refused to play in the 1970
World Cup, however was later accepted. Brazil played against Italy in the final
and won the game. After the game, Italian defender Tarcisio Burgnich said:
"Before the game I thought he was skin and bone like everyone else - but I
was wrong." Pelé played in his last international match on July 18, 1971.

Today, Pelé is one of
the most famous players in football history and is often referred to as the
